Augmentation mammoplasty (round or anatomical silicone prostheses)
It is the surgery that improves the shape, size, symmetry and appearance of the breasts. During the first consultation, the plastic surgeon will evaluate the size and shape of the breasts, the firmness of the skin. In all cases, a breast ultrasound or mammography will be requested as a pre-operative examination, according to their age. The different surgical techniques will be explained, the size and shape of your breasts and the options or combination of procedures that are best for you will be discussed.
You must express your expectations in a sincere and frank manner, so that the plastic surgeon is also frank and shows you the available alternatives for your problem, with the risks and limitations of each of them. You will be given instructions on how to prepare for surgery, including rules on taking food and liquids, smoking or taking or suppressing medications, vitamins and vitamin supplements. Breast augmentation surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Some cases can be performed under local anesthesia and sedation.
Breast augmentation is done through a small incision that is placed, depending on the anatomy of the patient, by the areola, in the breast groove or in the armpit. The incision is designed so that the resulting scar is not visible. Through this incision the breast tissue is lifted, a pocket is created and the prosthesis is placed directly under the breast tissue or under the pectoral muscle. The procedure lasts between 2 and 3 hours. The stitches are removed between 10 and 14 days; the edema does not completely subside until 4 or 6 weeks.
After a breast augmentation you can return to work in a few days, depending on the activity you perform. Follow your surgeon’s instructions about what exercises you can perform; Avoid lifting objects over the head for 2 to 3 weeks. Your breasts will be more sensitive than normal for 2 to 3 weeks, so it may be wise to avoid excessive physical contact until 3 or 4 weeks. Controls with ultrasound or mammography should be done once a year. The operation will not limit your breastfeeding ability if you become pregnant. There is no evidence that breast prostheses affect fertility, pregnancy or lactation.
There is no proven scientific evidence that prostheses cause breast cancer or connective tissue diseases such as Lupus or Arthritis. The placement of a prosthesis does not prevent the realization of mammograms.
The prosthesis used is cohesive silicone gel, with a textured surface (rough) and sometimes with polyurethane wrap.
